1997 Jeep Safari

Every year in Moab, Utah, Red Rock Four Wheelers sponsor the annual Jeep Safari. There are about 1,600 registered vehicles that take part each year. This is one of the big four wheel drive events in the US. You do not have to be registered to attend the event though. You don't even need a 4x4. You could just go down there and watch, or hike, or mountian bike. Five of us were able to take our 4x4's down this year. Maybe the other guys will take theirs next year. Don't you hate it when people are so afraid of damaging their trucks that they refuse to take them off road. The two Samurais went down early in the week and rode along in the first annual Zukfari, sponsored by Wild West Off Road. Thanks to them for a great trip. They even kept it free for us poor Suzuki owners.
Lion's BackHere Wade is coming down Lion's Back. Pretty scary after watching a Jeep slip down the entire steep part. We managed to avoid any breakdowns until the last day. This Suzuki broke down on the way home, forcing us to spend another night in Green River.
Scott's WranglerHere is Scott coming down a ledge on the Steel Bender trail. He gets a lot of flex with those Old Man Emu springs and disconnected sway bars. Next on his list is an ARB air locker.
Coming out of a hot tub Mike lifts a wheel for a picture in a hot tub at the top of Moab Rim. Mike had a slight problem with his driveline flange when we first arrived but quickly had it fixed in time for our first run on Golden Spike (what a trail to start us newcomers out on!). The weather was very good all week long. It did get a bit windy from time to time on top of the ridges.
Bronco on the edgeHere is Clark in his 78 Ford Bronco. This was quite a scare seeing as how there is a 100 foot drop just to his right. This vehicle also suffered some major problems on the last day. The entire rear end fell apart; broken blocks, bent U-bolts. We had to head home before he had gotten it fixed. He is probably still there.
Justin's WranglerWe were all quite frankly amazed that Justin didn't brake anything spinning his wheels, bouncing and hopping off just about every difficult obstacle. It's always fun to watch other people brake down though as long as you don't have to help repair it. If you have never been to this event I suggest you make plans to be there next year. On Big Saturday, the highway patrol shuts down highway 191 while almost 2,000 4x4's parade out of town to their trails. It's getting bigger and bigger every year.
Wade on Widow Maker We had two roll-overs on our first day with the Zukfari. We also witnessed a pretty bad roll-over on Potato Salad Hill as well. There are about 25 trails surrounding the Moab area. This year we did Golden Spike, Moab Rim, Metal Masher, and Steel Bender. After the Saturday lineup, we decided to go visit Arches National Park.
